UnitBirwelco completes on Pembroke Power Station stack contract

UnitBirwelco has recently completed the erection of five Nr exhaust stacks at the RWE gas fired power station in Pembroke.

The work, which was carried out for the Combined Cycle Gas Terminal (CCGT), involved the manufacture of five steel construction stacks each standing 75 metres in height and over seven metres in diameter.

In total 1060 tonnes of preformed stack shell plates were delivered to UnitBirwelco’s dockside facility in Pembroke Dock for fabrication into 15-metre long stack module sections.

UnitBirwelco’s dockside location again proved to be an invaluable asset in this contract due to the lack of storage and prefabrication space at the construction site. The modules were later transported by barge downstream to the power station jetty for offloading and transportation into the construction site. When on site the modules were completed and ladders and platforms were attached to the vessels before they were lifted into their final position for welding to their supporting can.
