UnitBirwelco reinforces presence in international markets

UnitBirwelco, has cemented its presence in the international oil and gas market after completing work on one of the largest single structures to be manufactured in Wales.

UnitBirwelco fabricated the 28m high, 190 tonne fired heater at its facility in Pembroke Dock, South Wales, for shipping to Norway on one of the largest vessels to ever dock in the port.

As a result the engineering company has become one of only a small number of companies capable of supplying a single fully modularised cylindrical fired heater - after completing the work that will be used in the Statoil Hydro Kollsness Project in Norway.

Shipped from UnitBirwelco’s engineering and fabrication facility in Pembroke Dock, the project involved UnitBirwelco’s team completing the engineering, procurement, fabrication and modularisation of the radiant heater and its convection box, stack, burner assembly and its associated infrastructure.

The vertical cylindrical radiant hot oil heater with helicoil coil measures 14m x 13m x 28m, and as a result was moved to the dock side using specialist transport and heavy lifting cranes, before being shipped to Norway on a 150m long vessel.

The work carried out by the UnitBirwelco team in Pembroke Dock has enabled the completed heater to be shipped as a virtually finished item inclusive of mechanical tests and commissioning

Speaking on the complexity of the project, Bill Ledwood Managing Director of UnitBirwelco said: “It is a real achievement and marker of UnitBirwelco’s capabilities that we have been able to undertake this significant piece of work.

“The sheer dimensions of this single unit, and the considerations that have had to be taken into account throughout the project and during its move have been extensive, but have ultimately resulted in an extremely impressive piece of equipment, built to exacting quality standards and completed on schedule.

“Our team has worked extensively to counteract the difficulties associated with constructing and transporting a single unit of this size to enable the heater to be shipped as a completed assembly and minimising the costs and risks associated with site construction work, and therefore bringing added benefit to the client.”

UnitBirwelco, has facilities in Swansea, Pembroke Dock, Humberside and Halesowen following the acquisition in 2010 by the original South Wales based Unit Group of Midlands engineering company Birwelco.

The acquisition propels UnitBirwelco into a small number of contractors worldwide who can complete the full cycle of engineering, procurement & construction with an integrated approach for large-scale Projects within the oil, gas, refinery, chemical, petrochemical and utilities industries.

The acquisition is set to create 100 new skilled jobs within the business as the company forecasts a turnover in excess of £50million by 2013.
