Artificial Intelligence History

Although the term artificial intelligence (AI) was first introduced in 1956, its relevance and practical application have grown significantly in recent years. This growth is largely due to the surge in data availability, advances in algorithms, and substantial improvements in computing power and data storage capabilities.

In its early days during the 1950s, AI research focused on problem-solving and symbolic processing. By the 1960s, organisations like the U.S. Department of Defense began exploring the potential of AI, training systems to simulate basic human reasoning. Notably, the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) led initiatives in the 1970s, such as digital street mapping, and developed intelligent personal assistant technologies as early as 2003 - well before mainstream applications like Siri, Alexa, or Cortana.

These foundational efforts laid the groundwork for the automation and intelligent systems in use today, including decision-support tools and smart search engines that enhance human performance rather than replace it.
