The Full Service Supplier Strategy

When you buy a product, it’s fair to assume that it’s gone through the process of design, design review, manufacturing, in process inspection and test, installation, and maybe more levels of inspection and test. For engineered products, the product life cycle can be a long and complicated process, with different organisations and experts with different specialities getting involved to make sure that the final product is delivered on time and to specification.

The majority of suppliers are limited to manufacturing a product in isolation, working with a set of designs provided by the customer and relying on sub-contractors to conduct various other processes including inspection and test. This can be a long and drawn out process for all parties involved.

Increasingly, organisations are being asked to provide and take responsibility for a full range of services from Design to Engineering, Manufacturing, Installation, Inspection, Test and Maintenance, referred to as a Full-Service Supplier (FSS) strategy, which is proving to be very advantageous for many business models.

The main advantage of the The Full Service Supplier Strategy is that all processes are under one ‘roof’, streamlining the supply chain, resulting in better quality and faster lead times. Having the design and manufacturing facility in house has its own advantages - any manufacturing issues can quickly be raised and discussed with the design team and visa versa, making it infinitely easier to gain customer approval and implement changes quickly and efficiently across the whole process.

There is also a level of security for the customer, project responsibility is with one organisation and full ownership for quality and delivery is maintained, a very attractive plus for any customer.
