The steam temperature rises above the saturation point, becoming superheated steam. The degree of superheating depends on factors such as:

Placed in the convection section of the boiler, these superheaters absorb heat primarily through convection from flue gases. They operate at lower temperatures compared to radiant superheaters.


Primary and Secondary Superheaters

Some boilers use a combination of primary and secondary superheaters. The primary superheater raises steam temperature initially, while the secondary superheater further increases it to the required level.

This steam passes through a superheater that raises its temperature to about 600°C or higher. The superheated steam then drives the turbine, which converts thermal energy into mechanical energy.


The increase in steam temperature from superheating can improve the plant’s thermal efficiency by 2 to 5 percentage points. This improvement translates into significant fuel savings and reduced carbon dioxide emissions over the plant’s lifetime.

Advances in materials science and boiler design continue to improve superheater performance. Some emerging trends include:

  • Use of advanced alloys and coatings to resist high-temperature corrosion

  • Integration of superheaters with advanced control systems for precise temperature regulation

  • Development of compact superheater designs for smaller, modular boilers

  • Application of superheaters in renewable energy plants such as biomass and waste-to-energy facilities
