“Work safe, stay safe” a look into Unit Birwelco’s safety strategy

Our work safe, stay safe motto was originally chosen by our employees in a strapline competition, this in itself shows the commitment that we have to safety, everyone is on board and aware of our goals.

The covid-19 pandemic then brought a whole new chapter to health & safety handbook, with companies like ours having to balance our vision between workshop safety and the new covid-19 precautions.

Despite this, we’ve always ranked health and safety as our number one priority, this is reflected in our statistics. In both of our manufacturing facilities we have-

  • Unit Superheater Engineering- over 200,000 hours worked without a reportable injury

  • Unit Engineers and Constructors- over 1.2 million hours worked without a reportable injury

As an organisation and as individuals we are committed to creating a safe working environment and preventing risk, accidents and ill health. Our operational managers are supported by our dedicated Health and Safety coordinators who operate as an integral part of our management team. But how do we do this? Our Health and Safety policy objectives include:

  • The implementation of appropriate organisational structures in managing Health and Safety, with a clear definition of duties and responsibilities for all employees

  • The promotion of a Health and Safety culture, achieved by ensuring effective representation of, and participation by, all employees

  • Mechanisms and systems to ensure progressive improvement of Health and Safety for all UnitBirwelco employees

  • Effective liaison and collaboration with the regulatory authorities’ standard-setting bodies, professional institutions, and trade associations

  • ISO450001 certified

Our general safety principles include – but are not limited to – raising workplace standards and the awareness of Health and Safety among directors, managers, and other employees of the group, together with the enhancement of the important role of employee representation in managing Health and Safety.

Our Unit Engineers & Constructors division have even been awarded the ROSPA gold award for health and safety performance for the 5th consecutive year.

The Skills, knowledge, and safety culture is critical to Unit Birwelco’s success. A lot of hard work and commitment to working safety has enabled UB to continually complete projects while remaining injury free. Following policies and safety procedures are key, along with Safety training, TBT’s, & safety meetings.

Every department and every employee understands and embraces our safety culture and has contributed and participated in this success.
